GXS COMMUNITY - Mixed-Use Residential High Rise

This is a Year 3 Semester 2 Project in National University of Singapore.

Tutor: Neo Sei Hwa

The project is based on brief to envision the future of Singapore housing & a sharing community.

GXS Community - Graduate, Ex-Convict & Senior Community

Located at Bugis, which was previously known for the famous Rocher Centre. The project predict the future, as of how housing would be like and catering towards the aging population of Singapore.

In society, active seniors that wants to work due to either retrenchment or their age are still able to contribute based on their experiences and knowledge. Fresh graduates are able to benefit from their experiences & able to come here to set-up their start up business. Also at the same time, Singapore ex-convicts are unable to face society as they do not have much skill-sets or education. They are able to contribute to Singapore dying culture of hawker centre for cooking & hand craft work like carpentry.

Using the case studies of ex-convict 18-Chef owner, to understand also the ratio of mentorship and number of staff working. Formulate as a guide in designing this project, to create a safe environment for the active seniors & fresh graduates.

The design strategies is to create a self surveillance using the idea of tension. Visually, along the corridors and from the ground floor pedestrians or neighbours are able to facility the people safety living with ex-convicts. Funneling the main pedestrian traffic coming from Bugis MRT, forming clusters of activities happening on the ground floor. On the exterior, massing of the building are configure as the active seniors are being expose to the public and being extruded more than the ex-convict. As the ex-convict are setback, it offers a lesser tension towards the public. The communal areas creates possiblities for all 3 users to interact together and work together.

The GXS Community is a self-protecting community and a future halfway housing typology for ex-convict to learn, train and able to face the society.
